Akasaka Umaya is an authentic Japanese restaurant in Akasaka produced by the famous kabuki actor - best Japanese restaurant in this area. Many locals don't even know this exists because it's totally hidden. Umaya looks like a secret restaurant, which is very HARD to find because it's in a back street, and what's even harder is that the entrance looks like a shrine with a red looking shinto gates, so who would imagine there is a restaurant inside. Once you go through the torii gates and walk about 20m, you'll see the old looking Japanese house from 50 years ago. They have 2 floors, and my favorite is 2nd floor, where you can dine on Tatami. Perfect for those who want to experience authentic Japanese restaurant with reasonable price. Their lunch is quit reasonable and very high quality too. My favorite is pork shabu shabu. Make sure you check out their bathroom because it is VERY old style and unique. You would not be able to see something like that unless you visit country side of Japan.
