Tocen Goshoboh, the hot spring inn, is historic, traditional, elegant, provides great service, and serves superb meals. You can easily walk a few minutes up a slight grade from the village train and bus stations to the ryokan, or a ride can be arranged in a black cab used as a shuttle. The hot spring baths in the hotel are excellent - you can feel and see the mineral content in the water of the outdoor bath. The rooms are spacious and included 2 massage chairs and nice private bathroom. The meals are served in room. There is a sitting area/salon on a lower level with tables and chairs that served complimentary beverages, an occasional snack, and provided newspapers to include 1 in English. This is the most charming onsen area I have visited and Goshoboh is a top tier hot spring ryokan. It is simply, to repeat, elegant. Alas, there was 1 blemish during our stay.
The Arima-Onsen area is a fantastic little village tucked into the mountains behind Kobe on a hillside - enough walking, looking, shopping, and eating to spend 1 day. Check to make sure you visit on a day when all the shops are open.
