At Nezu Shrine in Ueno, you can see hundreds of Shinto shrine gates, which looks just like Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto. The bright orange gates make you feel like you’re in Kyoto. We call this area Ya-Ne-Sen (Yanaka, Nezu, Sendagi). It's a traditional looking area close to central Tokyo where you can taste the history of Japan.
Nezu shrine is beautiful all year, but one of the best times to visit is spring, with flowers blooming with the bright orange gates (torii in Japanese). The shrine also looks gorgeous with white powder snow covering the torii on a snow day in winter. It's fascinating to see how such a traditional shrine is in the middle of Tokyo. If you want a quieter, less touristy (off the beaten path) shrine to visit, Nezu Shrine is the best place to go. It's not as busy as some of the more famous shrines in Tokyo like Yasukuni Shrine, Meiji Jingu or Sensoji. The Japanese garden inside the Nezu shrine is also worth a visit and great photo spot.
