Shinsen-en is the one of the oldest garden left as the original form in Kyoto.It was found in year 794, when the Emperor Kammu developed the palace in newly-founded capital of Heian-kyo(Kyoto).The garden was named so meaning the well keeps gushing out fresh water.
According to one reference,it was the site where "Hanami"(cherry blossoms viewing) was held first time."Hanami" is a common activity of the Spring season in Japan throughout the history even today.
