The high priest Ganjin who came to Japan from China in 754 opened this temple in order to teach the commandments of Buddhism to other priests.
Ganjin imparted the Buddhist commandment to Emperor Shomu at the ordination platform temporarily set up in front of the Great Buddha Hall and later built the Kaidan-in Temple in its present location (to the west of the Great Buddha Hall).
