It is said that this temple was first built in 629 by Ekan, a priest from the Korean kingdom of Goguryeo.It fell into a state of disrepair after catching fire in the 12th century, but it was rebuilt in the 13th century. A thirteen story pagoda stands in the center of the temple grounds which is famed as the masterpiece of Igyomatsu who was invited to Japan from Sung Dynasty China.
