Dogo Onsen, located in Matsuyama, Ehime, is one of Japan's oldest hot springs with a history of about 3,000 years. The three-story castle-styled wooden structure with a small tower on its roof was build in 1894 and designated as the first important cultural asset as a public bathhouse in Japan in 1994. The decorative building with Kami-no-yu or Bath of Gods on the first floor and Tama-no-yu or Bath of the Spirits on the second is what the bathouse in Hayao Miyazaki's animated film Spirited Away was modeled after
